I hopped on board a media bus that was going to the Ottawa airport to welcome Kate and William. I was facinated with all the journalists. There were Reuters photographers on board from Britain and some from Japan as well. This is a behind the scenes view of what it takes to get those famous pictures that we all enjoy.
I first noticed that there was no red carpet being rolled out which I couldn't understand. Later I learned that as soon as the Royal Couple would open the door of the aircraft and come down the stairs, the motorcade would pull up right in front of the plane and block the media view. I don't know who planned that, but I question why the Government would provide a photo opp and then get right in the way.
Here are my pictures...
The boys from Reuters
Crowds waiting for their Royal Highnesses
Two officers from the RCMP
Waiting dignitaries... including Foreign Minister John Baird who didn't seem want to be photographed either
I love watching planes ...
Mayor Jim Watson with young boy who would gift the Princess with Flowers
Doesn't he look like the guy from "The Matrix"
These guys would get the good pictures!
Prince William's Flag
There they are!
The tops of heads... Prince William, Minister John Baird and Kate!
Umm... CBC is probably wondering how to make a story out of that.
Prince William and Kate's car... If you look closely you can see him looking out.
The Reuters guys looking for a good clean picture to file.
I asked the British fellow behind me on the bus if he got any good pictures and his response was "That was bloody awful!" There was no wave, and he couldn't understand why they couldn't walk down together and what the heck was with the motorcade driving right up in front?
In my hurry to get a few shots of the motorcade leaving I somehow managed to trip over somebody's camera equipment and pulled a few muscles in my leg. Unfortunately I will not make it to Parliament Hill tomorrow for the Canada Day festivities. Also, I don't think I'm going to make a very good paparazzi as I seem to be more fascinated with the Journalists and the airplanes etc. I did find it a very interesting experience though.
I'm looking forward to some holidays and photographing flowers and beach scenes :)
