I was walking the dogs along the Jock River in Barrhaven when the contrast stopped me. Dark branches in the foreground, the misty river dissolving into white behind them. I raised the camera just long enough to make the frame.
This is how most of my best images happen — not through planning but through a moment of recognition on an ordinary walk. The Jock River in winter has a particular quality of stillness, the water deciding whether to freeze entirely, the bare trees holding the mist. It asks you to slow down.
